SuprNova.org and BitTorrent
SuprNova is a site full of BitTorrent files. BitTorrent is peer to peer protocol which allows for mass distribution and swarming where many clients are anticipated and there is a lack of server bandwidth or servers.
A tracker is a static server that coordinates seeds and peers, so that the two may make connections where necessary. Trackers take a lot of bandwidth to operate and are easily shut down by authorities when they are found to be illegal, because of their centralized nature.
One server, or seed, can use a calculated method of uploading chunks of a file to the peers connected so that distribution does not encounter a bottleneck in bandwidth with, for example, one seed and 1000 peers.
The torrent file itself contains hash information in order to ensure that there are no discrepancies between the downloaded file and the file being served. Some BitTorrent clients will actually ban peers that send you bad data, so there is really little worry of corrupted files. Additionally, there is a manifest of file names and folders included in the torrent so that users may see exactly what files are being retrieved (if there are multiple files).
There are multiple clients available for use with torrent networks. Among them are:
- BitTorrent Official Client - Bram Cohen's original client. Very basic but very stable.
- BitTornado - TheShad0w's modified BitTorrent client. Is very similar to the original client, but modified to advanced users' tastes.
- Azureus - Quickly gaining popularity among BitTorrent fans, this client uses a single window to track all torrents being downloaded.
